ERIN O'TOOLE DEFEATED IN REFORM ACT VOTE

Political pro-life organization RightNow is pleased to see Erin O’Toole removed as leader by a caucus vote as per the provisions in the Reform Act and is prepared to working to elect a new leader who will maintain her or his commitment to party members.

OTTAWA, ON (February 2, 2022) – Political pro-life organization RightNow is pleased to see that Erin O’Toole has been defeated by the House Caucus of the Conservative Party of Canada as per the provisions of the Reform Act and is prepared to participate in the next Conservative Party of Canada leadership race.

“Erin O’Toole lost the confidence of members of caucus, members of the party, and the Conservative Party of Canada’s voter and donor coalition over the past year,” said Scott Hayward, Co-Founder and President of RightNow. “There are a number of possible beginnings of the end for his leadership: the lies regarding Derek Sloan and his eviction, the flip-flop on the carbon tax, the flip-flop on a variety of issues during the election such as conscience rights and firearm rights, and the way he treated members of the caucus before and after the election campaign.”

“We were disappointed that Erin O’Toole did not keep to his leadership race promises in having pro-life voices at the table in any significant way,” said Alissa Golob, co-founder of RightNow. “While he hired a few pro-life staff in his office and had some good pro-family policies in his election platform, he flip-flopped on his only key pro-life policy (conscience rights) and voted against Cathay Wagantall’s sex-selective abortion ban bill, something supported by the vast majority of Canadians.”

“We have been working with caucus members, National Councillors, and members of the party since the federal election to remove Erin O'Toole as leader, whether it was via the Reform Act or through other means of the party’s constitution”, said Hayward.

“Whether in Quebec, in the Atlantic provinces, in Ontario, or everywhere in Canada, Francophones have a natural sympathy for leaders who are firm, solid, and remain unwavering in their convictions. Because of his numerous flip-flops, O’Toole was everything but that, which is not characteristic of a leader.” states Catherine Mongenais, RightNow’s Regional Director for Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

“We will be working to ensure that the newly elected leader is a person who will maintain her or his commitments to party members. I would hope that the lesson for the new leader from the Erin O’Toole experience is that pro-lifers have a strong voice in the party and are ready to work with the leader to advance reasonable and popular pro-life policies”, said Golob. “That being said, we will not tolerate flip-flops on promises made to us from the leader on our issues and do what is necessary to have the party move on to something and someone better.”
